IFTA is International Fuel Tax Agreement, which is an agreement between the 48 states and 10 provinces in Canada, to collect fuel taxes and redistribute the fuel taxes collected from interstate carriers. Under this agreement, motor carriers can obtain IFTA licenses from the home state jurisdiction, which is considered, the base state.
IFTA Tax filings are required quarterly, and all miles driven, fuel tax paid, and gallons purchased must be recorded and retained for each state or Canadian province the vehicle traveled through. The carrier is required and is responsible to file this information and remit any amounts owed member jurisdiction through the base state.
